Workshops for Young People
We have 19 one-hour workshops ready for young people between the ages of 12 and 16. We have 13 workshops on history and 6 workshops on historical science and technology.
HISTORY
1. The Ancient History of the Nile Valley. This workshop deals with the ancient history of Egypt.
2. The Songhai Empire. This workshop deals with the medieval history of a vast West African Empire that ruled over portions of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania, Mali, Nigeria, and Niger.
3. Medieval Nigeria. This workshop deals with the medieval history of the Yoruba kingdoms and the Benin Empire.
4. The East African Coast. This workshop deals with the medieval history of omalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique.
5. Ancient Axum. This workshop deals with the ancient history of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
6. The Slave Trade. This workshop provides an overview of the main currents that happened during the transatlantic enslavement system.
7. Black Societies in Brazil and Guyana. This workshop (also workshops 8 to 10) deals with the resistance to the slave trade. The Maroon communities of Guyana, and the Republic of Palmares in Brazil were made up of runaway slaves who fled the plantations to create their own governments.
8. Black Societies in Jamaica and Barbados. This workshop deals with the Maroon communities of Jamaica and the antislavery rebellions in Barbados.
9. Black Societies and Resistance in the United States. This workshop deals with enslaved Africans in America running away to create maroon societies just like those of South America and the Caribbean.
10. The Haitian Revolution. This was the revolution of Africans enslaved in Haiti that led to the dismantlement of the Slave Trade.
11. Black Personalities in Britain. This workshop deals with great black personalities of 18th and 19th century Britain such as Oludah Equiano and Ignatius Sancho.
12. The Pan African Movement. This workshop deals with the 6 historic conferences from 1900 to 1945 that led to African independence.
13. Black Literature in the Atlantic Age. This deals with the great black writers of the 18th and 19th centuries such as Lucy Terry, Frederick Douglass, and Mary Prince.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
14. Early African Contributions to Astronomy. This workshop concentrates on the astronomy of the Ancient Egyptians, the Songhai Empire, and the Dogon people.
15. Early African Contributions to Navigation. This workshop concentrates on the voyages of the Medieval Malians to Mexico in 1311 AD.
16. Early African Contributions to Metallurgy. This workshop discusses the lost wax technique used in mediaeval Nigeria and also the production of steel in early East Africa.
17. Early Architecture in Africa. This workshop discusses some of the early architecture of Ghana, Mali, Tanzania, and Ethiopia.
18. Early African Contributions to Medicine. This workshop deals with the medicine and surgery of the Egyptians, the medicine of the Songhai Empire, and some of the medical ideas introduced into the Americas by enslaved Africans.
19. Black Scientists and Inventors of the Atlantic Age. This workshop deals with important African American scientists and inventors such as Benjamin Banneker, Dr George Washington Carver, Dr Percy Julian, etc.
